MERMAIDS & MERMEN
|
| MELUSINE |
| Melusine was the best known
of the European mermaids. She founded the fortune of the great French
house of Lusignan, and was so famous that several families, among them
those of Luxembourg and Rohan, had their pedigrees altered so as to be
able to claim descent from the water sprite. Some stories describe
Melusine (also spelled Melusina) as half human and half water snake,
others half human and half fish. |

MERMAIDS
& MERMEN |
|
This excerpt from Peter
Lum's Fabulous Beasts (1951) goes into great detail concerning merpeople,
their relationship to the German Meriminni, the Icelandic Marmenill, and
other, and the various possible origins of these legendary creatures. Also
covers Ea-Oannes, sea-nymphs, Manu, the little mermaid, Malusine, and other fishy creatures from around the
world. A very good read! |

MERSEY
MERMAID -- A true mermaid story |
|
Here is a true story about a
nineteenth-century Liverpool sailor who truly believed he had been saved
by a mermaid. Furthermore, this sailor loved the mermaid so much that just
before he died he asked to be buried at sea so that he could be reunited with
her. |

SEA MONSTERS |

MAKARA |

Although taking many forms
-- elephant-makara, dragon-makara, goat-makara, and so on -- the makara is
a sea-beast, and so we have included it here. |
